The December holidays are just around the corner . With summer in full swing , schools closing and many of us looking forward to some well-deserved rest and relaxation , it ’ s easy to let go of our healthy habits . And , while it ’ s tempting to kick off your shoes and ‘ sloth ’, keeping yourself active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during the break , will set you up for a great start in the new year .

Here are some simple tips to help you stay healthy and active while you ’ re on holiday .

While travelling

Long hours sitting in a car , on a bus or even a plane can be tiring . Make sure you take a break or get up a move regularly – as often as you can - and take time to stretch . Simple stretching exercises can make a big difference and will also get your blood flowing . Remember to have regular stops while you are driving , to avoid tiredness and lack of concentration .

Dance , dance , dance

Dancing is another fun way to stay in shape . Not only is dancing a great cardio workout but it also improves flexibility , strength and endurance . So , turn up the volume and let the beat move you while keeping fit .

Pack your walking shoes and stride out to the beach , the local park , a restaurant , shopping centre or go sightseeing . Walking is easy and free and it ’ s amazing what you will see and discover when you slow down and take in your surroundings ... whether it ’ s outdoors or the local architecture of the city and neighbourhood .
Plan fun family outings to a local or national park and nature trails . It ’ s a fun way to combine a healthy activity and quality time together . And a walk in nature is a proven mood booster .
If you ’ re at the beach , don ’ t forget that walking on the sand adds extra resistance , giving your leg muscles a more intense work out . Take a beach bat and ball , it ’ s not only fun but a good work out too .
