STOP SMOKING, ALCOHOL AND DRUG USE No level of alcohol, tobacco or recreational drug use is considered safe during pregnancy. These substances can cause miscarriage, premature birth and long-term developmental problems in your baby. You should aim to stop all alcohol intake and stop smoking as soon as you decide to try to fall pregnant.
CHECK YOUR MENTAL HEALTH Mental health is as important as physical health when preparing for pregnancy. Local studies show that one in three pregnant women may experience symptoms of depression. If you’ re feeling persistently anxious, sad or overwhelmed, reach out for help. Having a support structure is invaluable.
UNDERSTAND YOUR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH Track your menstrual cycle and ovulation patterns to understand your fertility window. If you’ ve been trying to conceive for more than a year( or six months if you’ re over 35) without success, speak to a fertility specialist.
Also consider:
• Pap smear screening to detect any abnormalities or signs of HPV-related cervical disease
• Understanding your family history of genetic conditions that may require specialist advice or screening
PREPARE FINANCIALLY AND LOGISTICALLY Pregnancy and childbirth come with financial implications. Things to consider when planning your pregnancy include:
• Medical aid coverage: Check what maternity and newborn benefits are included in your plan
• Access to care: Will you give birth in a public or private facility?
• Parental leave: Know your rights under South Africa’ s Basic Conditions of Employment Act
CREATE A SUPPORT NETWORK Pregnancy is easier with a strong support system. Connect with your partner, family and friends. Consider joining antenatal classes or online forums to meet other expecting moms. If you’ re a single mother or facing challenges, ask your healthcare provider about community resources and support groups in your area.
