‘ Undiagnosed hearing loss in children can result in academic difficulties. Studies in underserved communities show that hearing loss affects at least 22 per 1 000 pre-school children. Further research indicates that between 3 to 6 per 1 000 babies are born with hearing impairment, highlighting the need for early detection and intervention.
‘ As part of our enhanced maternity programme and post-childbirth care, we include hearing screenings for newborns up to 8 weeks,’ says Dr Hadebe.
GET TESTED TODAY Regular audiology( hearing) tests can help detect issues early and prevent further deterioration. Parents, ensure your children undergo hearing tests during routine health check-ups, especially if you notice any signs of hearing difficulties.
We have partnered with hearConnect to offer our members – as well as other South Africans – a free online hearing test.‘ Online tests provide a convenient first step,’ says Dr Hadebe.‘ Last year, 3 846 members used the online screener. And, through our Hearing Loss Management Programme( HLM), we also offer Audiology Anywhere™, where a mobile audiologist visits your home or office for testing.’
‘ If you think you might have a hearing problem, take an online test,’ urges Dr Hadebe.‘ This two-minute, professional screening can indicate whether you need to see an audiologist or hearing specialist. Hearing loss is one of the most under-diagnosed chronic conditions, yet it significantly impacts the quality of life of someone who is unable to communicate effectively. Take a test and get the help you need to hear clearly again.’
