LEON
Q: Hi Doctor My GP prescribed chronic medicine for high blood pressure but I feel fine now. Do I really need to take it? I don’ t want to keep paying for medicine I don’ t need.
A:
Hi Leon
This is a common question and a very important one. High blood pressure( hypertension) is often called the‘ silent killer’ because it usually has no obvious symptoms, even when it’ s dangerously high. Just because you feel fine doesn’ t mean your blood pressure is under control.
Stopping your medication, without medical advice, can lead to serious health risks, including a heart attack or stroke. While lifestyle changes can help manage or even lower your blood pressure over time, this doesn’ t usually replace the need for medication, at least not right away.
Bonitas members who are diagnosed with hypertension may apply to have their high blood pressure medicine paid from their chronic medicine benefit. This helps members stay on track with their treatment without worrying about unexpected costs.
REATLEGILE
Q: Hello Doctor I’ ve had this nagging pain in my hip for almost a year now. Should I be worried?
A:
Hello Reatlegile
Chronic hip pain that lasts for months, especially if it affects your movement or quality of life, should definitely be checked out. It could be related to anything from arthritis to tendon strain or even a pinched nerve. Ignoring it or hoping it will go away, could lead to further damage or mobility issues.
I recommend consulting your GP, who may refer you for an X-ray, to physiotherapy or a specialist, if needed.
As a Bonitas member, you have access to a network of healthcare providers and diagnostic benefits, including cover for X-rays, blood tests and specialist consultations, depending on your plan.
