Researchers have found that some of the bioactive elements of culinary herbs and spices include alkaloids , tannins , sulfurcontaining compounds , vitamins , phenolic diterpenes and especially flavonoids and polyphenols . As a bonus , people who eat spicy food often reduce their desire for salt and their salt intake , which lowers their blood pressure . So , if you want to be healthier - and eat better - spice up your dishes with some of these health-giving herbs .
CAYENNE PEPPER Piquant cayenne pepper can be used for a variety of ailments . It ’ s an anti-allergen so can help relieve allergies and the after-effects of allergic reactions . It also works well to fight off irritants which can cause upset stomachs , ulcers and sore throats . Cayenne pepper stimulates the production of saliva . This helps aid digestion and maintains optimal oral health . It ’ s also great at fighting off toothache and gum disease when applied topically .
NUTMEG Just a little nutmeg grated into soup or sauces can do your health a world of good . Nutmeg aids sleep – grate a little nutmeg into a glass of warm milk and drink before bedtime to have a peaceful night . Nutmeg also helps keep the brain sharp as it contains a natural organic compound called myristicin , known to shield your brain against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers . It also contains several trace minerals that keep the immune system strong including : Potassium , calcium , iron and manganese .
CUMIN This nutty and earthy spice complements beans , chicken , couscous , curry , fish , lentils , peas , pork , potatoes , soups and stews . It helps to lower blood sugar and is high in calcium , iron and magnesium . Cumin also stimulates the liver to secrete more bile , which aids in

Paprika contains four carotenoids namely – beta-cryptoxanthin , beta-carotene , lutein and zea-xanthin - to keep your eyes healthy . TURMERIC This yellow spice is often used in Indian and Thai cooking . A paste made with turmeric and water can be applied to wounds to speed up healing , while sipping on turmeric tea has been shown to relieve colds and respiratory problems . Turmeric has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties , to help relieve pain of arthritis , injuries and dental procedures . It also helps with heartburn and detoxifies the liver . Turmeric is a natural painkiller and has been shown to assist with diabetes . Try sprinkling a bit of turmeric on roast chicken and vegetables to reap its health benefits .
