As we embrace the colder months, it’ s important to be mindful of how winter can impact our health and wellbeing. Last year, we saw a significant increase in hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses – including Covid-19, influenza, pneumonia, H1N1, RSV and HMPV. Early signs suggested a similar trend this year, prompting us to take proactive steps.
Which is why we’ re proud to introduce our new Respiratory Illness Hub, a go-to resource for all things related to respiratory health. The Hub, available on the Bonitas website( www. bonitas. co. za / Respiratory-Hub), is open to all South Africans. It offers reliable, easy-to-understand educational information, including prevention tips, symptoms to watch out for and more. Read more about the Hub on pages 7 and 8.
While medicine plays a vital role in treating illness, immune-boosting nutrition is just as important to maintain your health. Eating wholesome, well-balanced meals and staying hydrated supports your recovery and can help you bounce back more quickly. And, while winter invites cosy evenings and warm drinks, it’ s important not to neglect physical activity. Staying active is essential for both your physical and mental wellbeing.
On page 9, we share simple, effective ways to stay healthy and energised this winter.
Mental health remains an area of concern in South Africa. According to the Mental State of the World Report, we rank 69th out of 71 countries, a sobering reflection of the challenges many people face. It’ s important to remember that mental health extends beyond diagnosed conditions like depression or anxiety. It includes how we manage stress, cope with everyday pressures and care for our emotional wellbeing. On pages 17 and 18, we share advice and resources to help you make mental health a priority.
Our ongoing partnership with Gift of the Givers continues to bring vital healthcare interventions to communities in need. One recent project, through a strategic collaboration between GOTG, Sibanye-Stillwater Mining Company and Bonitas, saw a newly renovated clinic and vital borehole project officially being handed over to the community of Boitekong. This underscores the importance of partnerships in driving real change and improving lives. See pages 21 and 22 for the full story.
