Shedding light on the silent thief of sight - glaucoma

The prevalence of glaucoma in South Africa is certainly cause for concern . According to recent studies , it is estimated that over a million South Africans are affected by this condition , with many more undiagnosed cases . The risk of glaucoma increases with age and individuals with a family history of the disease are also at a higher risk .
Glaucoma is often referred to as the ‘ silent thief of sight ’ because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms , until significant vision loss occurs .
This chronic eye condition forms part of the 27 Prescribed Minimum Benefits ( PMBs ) conditions covered by Bonitas . It is characterised by increased pressure within the eye , leading to damage of the optic nerve . If left untreated , glaucoma can result in irreversible blindness .
Regular eye check-ups are crucial for the early detection and management of glaucoma . As the symptoms are often subtle or absent in the early stages , routine eye examinations become the primary tool for identifying the condition . Optometrists can measure intraocular pressure , assess the health of the optic nerve and detect any signs of glaucoma during these examinations .
World Glaucoma Week ( 10 – 16 March this year ) serves as a catalyst for increased awareness of the importance of eye health and the risks associated with glaucoma . During this week , various events and campaigns are organised worldwide to educate the public , encourage regular eye check-ups and emphasise the significance of early detection in preventing irreversible vision loss .
By understanding the importance of regular eye check-ups , raising awareness and taking proactive measures , we can collectively work towards reducing the impact of glaucoma in our communities .
