Masterpiece of King Rajasinghe ' s Regime
Kandy Lake the mesmerizing masterpiece in the heart of the hill capital was built by the last king of Kandy Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807 next to the sacred temple of tooth relic Shri Dalada Maligawa . This man made beauty is also named as Bogambara Wewa , Kiri Muhudha ( Milk Sea ). The Kandy Lake acquires 47 acres of land space with a maximum depth of 59 feet . There are many traditional beliefs and stories related with this picturesque lake .
King Rajasinghe used paddy lands with the expertise of Architecture Deveda Moolacharya to build the Kandy Lake which stands as a great monument of the Kandyan monarchy . The Lake has a perimeter of 3.4 kilometers surrounded by the beautiful architecture of the Walakulu Bemma ( Wall of Clouds ). In the middle of the lake is the beautiful island which was The Royal Summer house for the Queen and the ladies of the court to relax . The Ulpange was built in next to the lake was the Royal bath house for the Queen and ladies who lived in the Royal Summer House .
After more than 200 years Kandy Lake is the most beloved travel destination for the local and foreign travelers . As the lake is surrounded with huge trees which emphasizes greenery is also been a great location for an early morning jog or a late evening walk .
The boat ride around the lake refreshes everyone with memories of the great Kandyan Era .
