Ayres Knowledge Center Using Bike Boxes to Increase Visibility and Safety | Page 9

An R10-6A (Stop Here on Red) sign can be installed near the stop bar to define the location where motorized vehicles should stop, which is behind the bike box at the stop bar. Bike box message signs, which vary in their design, are sometimes installed on signposts or on the traffic signal poles at the intersection when bike boxes are first applied to reiterate the message that bicyclists have the option to move into this marked area when the traffic signal is holding motorists at a red signal. When issues exist where right-turning vehicles often conflict with bicyclists, it is common for an R10-11 (No Turn on Red) sign to be installed to restrict right turns on red, allowing bicyclists to safely enter the bike box area without fear of right-turning vehicles causing right-hook crashes with bicyclists. Using bike boxes to put bicyclists in front of traffic, along with enforcement of the no-turn-on-red regulation, can reduce the chance of right-hook crashes. AYRESASSOCIATES.COM | 9
