Ayres Associates provided conceptual designs and cost estimates
for each of the proposed improvements. To support each of the
alternatives, the consultant looked at existing traffic data and performed
a speed study on the corridor to determine the present conditions.
Recommendations ranged from installing curb bump-outs to installing
pedestrian refuge islands. The team recommended bike lanes and a
high-visibility crosswalk to draw motorists’ attention to the key crossing
on the busy street. Construction of this project in the Midwest has not
yet been funded.

To provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and encourage motorists
to proceed with caution when pedestrians and bicyclists are near the
intersection, three recommendations for improvements were provided
for the municipality’s consideration. The suggested actions were tailored
to the capital available to be spent on the project and were aimed
at providing a safer crossing for pedestrians and encouraging slower
speeds on the busy north-south street.
