THE CHALLENGE: P arking and transportation enhancements
and functional improvements are needed to provide greater mobility
in a suburban neighborhood, including pedestrian and bicycle linkages,
parking, and effective wayfinding.
THE SOLUTION: Available accident information, traffic counts,
and volume forecasts were gathered to provide context for the desired
functional and experiential qualities of the street environment. Public
transportation, bicycle, and pedestrian use and service characteristics
along and around the corridor were reviewed. Mobility enhancement
designs, cost estimates, and potential funding sources were provided.
Enhancements included providing bicycle buffer zones in front of
businesses on the corridor, moving crosswalks to safe locations for
pedestrians to cross closer to their destinations, and recommending
colored pavement treatments to help create a sense of place on the
street.
The improvements were planned and designed for Wauwatosa,
Wisconsin’s MidTown Neighborhood, which is the subject of a
comprehensive strategic master plan to maintain the local character of
the North Avenue corridor while embracing a more walkable, family-
friendly environment amid the diverse service business districts and
residential areas within it.
