WELCOME

FOREWORD From John Elliott
INCLUDED IN THE JANUARY- FEBRUARY 2017 ISSUE OF AYCLIFFE TODAY BUSINESS …
/ 09 APPRENTICESHIP LEVY
Welcome to the first Aycliffe Today Business of 2017.
This year looks like interesting times. Eight long years after the global financial crisis, we’ re still not out of the woods. In fact, if the UK was a business it would have to declare for bankruptcy.
It seems very clear to me that we’ re collectively spending more than we earn, consuming more goods and services than we supply and yet the government is only concerned about growth.
The country is getting by through selling assets, the nicer sound-bite being inward investment, and borrowing money from who knows where.
Of course, this eases the pain, but it is not a long-term solution, in fact it’ s making our long term position worse.
Our problem is that we’ re consuming more than we can afford and yet the Bank of England policy is to stimulate consumption by printing money and lowering interest rates.
If it was not so serious it would be funny.
How can they get it so wrong? And there can be absolutely no doubt that the powers that be are getting it wrong.
Despite being a world power in every sense

Furthermore, we have no plans to correct the position, even though it only needs the common sense and discipline of a well-run business or household.
There are many good examples here on Aycliffe Business Park, which seems to be thriving.
So for Aycliffe at least, we appear to be on an upward curve – it’ s just a shame the national picture doesn’ t reflect that.
There are lots of positive news and features in this January-February 2017 issue of Aycliffe Today Business, which I hope you enjoy reading.
And don’ t forget about Aycliffe Business Park Community’ s Make Your Mark business awards, which is being held on Wednesday March 1 at the Xcel Centre. I’ d urge all companies to enter their relevant categories – you can read more about this on pages 18 and 19.
