Welcome to the 36th issue of Aycliffe Today Business – the magazine for Aycliffe Business Park.

It isn’ t often we have to report on negative news. We much prefer to talk up the good stuff, but we can’ t ignore other stories which impact many people on Aycliffe Business Park.

Hitachi Rail Europe recently confirmed it won’ t be renewing the contracts for more than 150 of its fixed-term employees at the end of December.
As the firm said to us in a statement, it was always in their plan to have a number of people on fixed-term contracts to allow the business to flex according to demand and contracts.
But we mustn’ t let the news deflect from the good news story around Hitachi and what it has brought to Aycliffe.
Hitachi currently employs 750 permanent staff, with another 500 temporary workers, and it’ s estimated to support 6,000 jobs in the supply chain, the majority of which are in the North-East.
Fixed-term contracts aren’ t uncommon in engineering and manufacturing – many of the big employers in Aycliffe also have them – so as sad and disappointing as it is for everyone, it shouldn’ t come as a great surprise when these firms have to re-jig their numbers.
Thankfully, bad news is usually heavily outweighed by goods news here in Aycliffe, and you only have to read this latest edition to see that.
There’ s bagfulls of it in this issue, covering the likes of Endeavour Partnership, Tekmar Group, 3M, Raisco, The Work Place, BTS Fabrications, South West Durham Training, ROF 59, OneGym, Finley Structures, Stiller Warehousing and Distribution, Greystone Legal, Thrive Marketing and Mantis Media.
And, as always, I offer a huge thank you to the businesses that support us through advertising, namely Certax Durham, Crafter’ s Companion, Business Durham, Lox of Love, Aycliffe Dairies, Durham Lifting, razorblue, Pease Way Medical Centre, Jackson’ s Coffee House, Commercial Expert, The County, EMCON, Fleet Recruitment, the King’ s Arms and Mandale Group.
I recently came up with a hashtag to promote all the good news stories that our sister publication, Tees Business, publishes about firms across the whole of the Tees Valley area – # TalkingUpTeesside has since become the talk of the Tees Twitterati, and the slogan has been adopted by the Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen.
Perhaps we should come up with something similar for Aycliffe, to remind everyone of all the great work Aycliffe Business Park( and its tenants) is doing for the region.
