FOREWORD: from Martin Walker
Welcome to the 37th issue of Aycliffe Today Business –
the magazine for Aycliffe Business Park.
I
had wanted to dedicate this issue to
Syd Howarth, but I quickly realised he
wouldn’t have wanted that at all.
Syd, I think, would rather we didn’t
fuss – just as he avoided the pomp and
ceremony around his richly-deserved MBE
two years ago – and would probably rather
we focused on the job at hand. Promoting
Aycliffe.
But I have to say, it’s probably little-
known just how much of an impact Syd
made on my life. His contribution to my
personal career – especially as a wannabe
journalist 20 years ago – was ever-lasting,
and so powerful. He helped me get my first
job in journalism.
I’m thankful to Stuart Howarth and his
family that they’re happy for me to talk
about Syd in this issue.
And I hope Syd knows how much his
help and support to me is appreciated to
this day.
I’ve written a short tribute, along with
comments from a few other people, in a
special feature in this issue, which I hope is
a fitting tribute to a great, great man.
After launching this magazine, we shared
a cuppa in my office – the Master and the
Apprentice – and he was, very kindly and
typically, extremely generous of my work.
He did tell me, in no uncertain terms,
that he didn’t agree with some of the bad
news we sometimes share on aycliffetoday.
co.uk, and that is something I’ve always
respected. He has built up the Newton
News as one of the pillars of Newton
Aycliffe’s community – a mainstay that has
outlived hundreds of community papers
across Britain – and something I’ve never
tried to emulate.
But the one thing we wholeheartedly
agreed on was promoting the town’s
businesses – to other businesses, but also
to the people of Newton Aycliffe – for the
benefit of the town and the people who are
employed by these businesses.
I’d like to think Syd and I had lots in
common when it came to the business
park – but if I make a tiny fraction of the
impact on Aycliffe in my life as he did his,
that will be some achievement.
