6 | www.aycliffetoday.co.uk NEWS BRIEFS 3-year ASBO for yob A Newton Aycliffe yob who terrorised residents and shopkeepers in the town has been handed a three-year ASBO. Police successfully applied for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order against 21-year-old Aycliffe resident Lewis McCormick. McCormick was said to have been involved in persistent anti-social behaviour, including intimidating members of the public and shopkeepers, being verbally abusive, fighting in a public place, and drunken and disorderly behaviour. McCormick was given the threeyear ASBO, and has been told to stay away from shops in the Simpasture and Neville Parade areas. Anyone who suspects McCormick may have breached his ASBO should ring Durham Police on 101. Man needs stitches after attack Police are appealing for witnesses after a man needed stitches to a cut eyebrow after an unprovoked attack in Newton Aycliffe. The incident happened in the Honister Place area of the town some time between 2am and 3am on Saturday November 23 when the victim was punched to the face by another man, knocking him to the floor where he received a further kick to the face. Anyone with info is asked to call 101, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Police relocate Newton Aycliffe’s police team has officially moved into their new home, sharing with the town’s fire brigade. The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Authority building on Central Avenue has become home to Aycliffe bobbies, a move that will help to provide a town centre police presence in the area and is believed to be one of the first in the country. The Fire and Rescue Service will continue to provide its operational response and community safety services from the station. The police station within the building will be open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday. NEWS AycliffeToday JAYDENE’S GOT TALLENT! Jaydene Chappell performed her own version of a wellknown rap to win Woodham Academy’s Apprenticeship Awareness Programme Woodham Academy student Jaydene Chappell impressed judges during the school’s Apprenticeship Awareness Programme when she performed a rap. The 13-year-old student put her own spin on Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air ditty to introduce her team’s presentation about Gestamp Tallent – Aycliffe’s biggest employer. Gestamp won Woodham Academy’s second annual Apprenticeship Awareness Programme after a closely-fought final presentation. Six high-profile businesses have spent the last nine weeks taking part in the successful scheme, which is part-funded by the Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (GAMP), which brings education and business together. Finley Structures, SWDT, A-Tech Fabrications, Ebac, Gestamp Tallent and the Bignall Group all started the programme back in September. Tallent’s team won it, with the main presentation being made by Jaydene Chappell, Yasmine Hynes, Adam Byrne and Ryan Harris, helped by David Pearson from Tallent. Aycliffe-based Mantis Media have worked with Boro firm Dave Allan Communications to publish One Giant Leap – a book to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Middlesbrough FC’s Carling Cup victory in 2004, the only major title in the club’s 137-year history. Lifelong Boro fan and former employee Martin Walker, managing director of Mantis Media and editor of Aycliffe Today, designed the 200page hardback book, which was written by his ex-MFC colleague Dave Allan, formerly the club’s media and co [][
