Foundation raises £ 60,000 to support the region ’ s young people
The North East STEM Foundation ( NESF ) has raised more than £ 60,000 to support the region ’ s young people into STEM education .
Hosted at South Durham University Technical College ( UTC ) on Aycliffe Business Park , the NESF ’ s glittering fundraising dinner brought together supporters for a night of recognition and acknowledgement of the foundation ’ s mission to remove the financial barriers , which prevent young people in the North East from pursuing education in science , technology , engineering and mathematics ( STEM ).
Among the 160 guests in attendance were an array of North East business stalwarts including Plastic Furniture Company , Teescraft Engineering Group , Dyer Engineering , North Tees , Steel Benders UK and Business Durham .
Newton Aycliffe shower designer and manufacturer Roman has recognised at the KBBFocus Awards .
The awards ceremony was held at The Brewery in London and Roman were awarded the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award 2023 .
Roman , which says it is committed to using recycled materials in the production process , ensures that all parts of all products can be recycled and reused back at their original value at their end of life .
At the end of 2021 , Roman achieved Carbon Neutral certification from the Carbon Trust .
Achieving Carbon Neutral status has been a key objective for Roman over recent years and
UTC South Durham hosted the STEM Foundation ’ s fundraiser .
The money raised will assist the NESF to inspire young people throughout the North East to pursue careers in STEM through various outreach programmes , as well as engaging employers across the region to become involved and showcase career opportunities .
A proportion of the funds raised , £ 20,000 , will be used to fund travel expenses for students to attend South Durham UTC .
The NESF ’ s mission is to ensure that every young person , regardless of their background , can access high-quality STEM education in a modern environment supported by employers .
It seeks to future-proof both local industries and the economy by producing highly skilled and innovative workers .
Tania Cooper , chair of the NESF , said : “ We are absolutely delighted that the dinner proved to be a success with an incredible turnout .”

Go Geothermal recently teamed up with Optimum Skills to offer work experience placements for young people aged 16-18 undertaking a Digital Skills Traineeship at the training company ’ s head office at Newton Aycliffe .
As part of their course , the young people spend the first six weeks undertaking classroom-based learning in digital skills , covering everything from marketing basics , content creation , marketing strategies and website creation .
LONDON CAMPUS Teesside University ’ s London campus is now complete and was showcased to potential students during an open day for those looking to study in the capital .
Several hundred students are now studying at Teesside University London , with a fresh intake enrolling this month .
And visitors were invited to an open day to find out more about the academic offer and meet some of the students who are already settling into their studies .
Teesside University London , based at Here East , is bringing in-demand subjects to new markets , with an initial focus on digital technologies and enterprise .
