LOCAL RUNNERS ORGANISE BUSINESS PARK LITTER PICK
Parts of Aycliffe Business Park are a little cleaner thanks to the work of Aycliffe Running Club .
The club decided to try out an initiative called “ plogging ” – a recreational activity originating in Sweden which incorporates jogging / walking and picking up litter .
Club members took part in the initiative , which is part of the ' Big Spring Clean ' initiative , in April , walking and jogging around the business park and collecting litter for one hour .
The event was organised by the Ladies Club Captain Jayne Rudd , with the business park chosen as the club bases a number of its training runs around the park and after a walk around the area , it was clear that the area could benefit from a clean up , with 20 bags being collected .
“ Those taking part found the experience positive and rewarding and there was a sense of giving back to the local area ,” said club representative Steven Dawson .
“ One member commented on how scary it was with the amount of litter collected in one
hour , although it would be a never ending task of keeping the area clean .
“ The member in question will now be patrolling their patch for fresh litter to ensure it remains clean !
“ As well as helping to tidy up the area , it is also a simple way to keep yourself active while doing a good deed for the local environment and giving something back to our local community .
“ A number of members expressed an interested in organising another plogging event and we hope that more members can take part next time and clear up even more litter in the process .”
GREEN CHAMPIONS A County Durham primary school and a festival focusing on the planet are among the winners of this year ’ s County Durham Environment Awards .
The awards , which are run by Durham County Council each year on behalf of the County Durham Environment and Climate Change Partnership , recognise the outstanding work that has taken place to improve the local environment .
Now in its 33rd year , the event celebrates schools , businesses , community groups and individuals that go the extra mile to look after their communities and promote sustainability .
EV CHARGE BOOST A further 150 electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across County Durham .
Durham County Council has been successful in securing an additional £ 3.1m from the government to expand the county ’ s charging infrastructure .
The authority is one of only three councils to receive additional funding to expand on an innovative pilot scheme , which it first took part in last year .
Having received £ 1.25m to plan and install an initial 100 charging points , the extra money will now take the total number of charging points in the county to 250 , including 60 rapid chargers .
TRAILBLAZERS County Durham has been selected to trailblaze a new government scheme which will provide integrated support to children and families .
Durham County Council is one of 75 local authorities to have had its application accepted to be part of the Family Hubs and Start for Life programme .
The government also announced the council is one of 14 applicants to have been chosen as a trailblazer for the scheme , which will see the authority receive additional funding to fast-track the delivery of the new service .
