NSW BRENDAN MURRAY WHAT’S YOUR FLAVOUR? Chocolate JOHNSON PILTON WALKER What is the project you have worked on that you are most proud of? The project I’m most proud of is always the one I’m working on at that given moment. But, if I had to choose, it would be the White Bay Cruise Terminal. It was a brave project, a brave team and a real breakthrough project for me personally. How has winning the Emerging Architect Prize changed your life? As someone who works in a large-practice environment and in large teams, it’s been a wonderful acknowledgement of more than just an individual. This acknowledgement extends to so many others who’ve been of such influence in my professional life: all of the mentors and team members who were part of the creation of our work together have all had a bit of a pat on the back as a result. It’s been great to celebrate together. PHOTOGRAPHY: BRETT BOARDMAN PHOTOGRAPHY Dream project? HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR DRINK? Scotch on the rocks. It’s hot in Australia. I love city-making and public projects and that will be the focus of any of my ideal projects. They’re challenging and highly constrained, but it’s exactly where architects need to be, and so this is the most worthwhile endeavour for me in the long run. My attitude is that each project is what you make of it to a large extent. Not all projects start out as a dream – and often circumstances can not be in your favour – but the brave decision is to change that circumstance and to try to make them dream-worthy. How do you interpret Do you have any advice for the conference theme other emerging architects ‘How Soon is Now?’ who are considering I look forward to hearing from the speakers. But, simplistically, my interpretation is that this is a call to action. applying for the Emerging Architect Prize? Use it as an opportunity to reflect on where you fit in the bigger picture.
