VIC MUIR How has winning the Emerging Architect Prize changed your life? Accolades certainly make you feel more confident that the decisions you made years ago were the right ones. It is always lovely when your peers recognise your contribution to what is a very large and varied industry. PHOTOGRAPHY: PETER BENNETTS FOR THE NGV MELBOURNE NOW CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY EXHIBITION AMY MUIR How do you interpret the conference theme ‘How Soon is Now?’ I am the sort of person who loves being surprised and therefore more often than not will turn up to the conferences fairly under-prepared in order to benefit from the full effect of the ‘surprise factor’. Having said that, I am excited about what the conference directors Cameron, Sam and Ben, will bring to the table. ‘Now’ is an important place for us all to assess in order to make the future as productive and effective as it can be. I also believe the changes to the format which we started to see emerge at the conference in Melbourne last year, are also encouraging conversation/debate which is always a good thing. It provides the conference with the variance it requires. The only downside of this is the FOMO that sneaks in when making decisions about which session you are going to attend. Tricky but good! Do you have any advice for other emerging architects who are considering What is the project you have worked on applying for the Emerging that you are most proud of? Architect Prize? Law Street House is an obvious one as it effectively became a way of life for 3.5 years. It was the practice’s first project and has informed the path moving forward. I really miss being on site and being physically involved in the build of projects. Dream project? At the moment I am a little obsessed with control towers. I would also refer to the exhibition designs that the practice were involved in as part of the NGV’s Melbourne NOW. It was an exciting time in the NGV landscape. It is also always such a delight collaborating with friends and peers. The Contemporary Jewellery Exhibition was particularly special. I am a huge fan of jewellery and the craft associated with this. Exhibition design provides the perfect balance to the elongated time lines associated with traditional architecture. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR DRINK? if it isn’t a vodka, soda and fresh lime then it is a Campari and soda but more often than not it is a nice dry rose. The paler the better. Throughout your career it is really important to remain true to what you believe in and finding a way of engineering this path.Your career isn’t necessarily about achievements. Achievements are a by-product of you throwing yourself at what you do with passion and love. Enjoying what you do is the most important thing. I tend to cross across practice, industry and education as I have always liked being involved in a broad range of environments and agendas.
