unfair water distribution causing
misery: conservation urgently needed
hua hin, THAILAND
In the seven years we have been publishing AWOL, certain issues crop up
again and again, and we return to one of these this week, namely water. It is
clear from several media reports that Thailand in general is facing a water
crisis, and while few reports mention Hua Hin, it has long been known to
be one of the driest places in the country.
Most of Hua Hin’s water is supplied from the Pranburi dam, and worryingly
this relatively small reservoir is currently only at 35% of capacity, with
just 135 milion cubic metres out of a possible 347 MCM. The next nearest
supply is the Kang Kra Chan dam, but this too is well below capacity with
just 46%, or 326 MCM.
We contacted the water department to try and find out what plans are in
place to find other sources of water, as well as to improve the distribution
of what water is available, as it is clear that certain parts of Hua Hin are
consistently under supplied and frequently have spells of one or two weeks
without water, leaving residents with no choice but to order water from the
private tankers, costing between 125 and 150 baht per cubic metre (1000
litres). Average water consumption in urban areas of Thailand is estimated
at about 250 litres per person per day, so this cost can soon mount up.
Unfortunately no one at the water department was able to answer our
questions, but we will persevere.
What we can say though is that even if you are in an area currently unblighted
by water supply problems, you should still try to conserve water right now;
on page two you will find some tips on how to save water and help get us
through the dry season, while saving yourself money at the same time.
