60 Naresdamri Road, Hua Hin
hua hin, THAILAND
There is no doubt that Hua Hin has changed over the years, and that this
change will continue for better or worse. Many things have improved, such
as the range of available options for eating, drinking and shopping, while
others have not, most notably the infrastructure. However one aspect of
the town that is less quantifiable than those is the overall ‘feel’ of the town;
a couple of decades ago it was easily classified as a small and quaint town
which largely depended on fishing and domestic tourists who wanted to
come to the place the Royal Family holidayed in.
The centre of the town was filled with old traditional teak houses, narrow
streets and alleys and samlors galore; aspects of that remain but are
slowly but surely disappearing, with many of the old houses either pulled
or burnt down and replaced by modern shophouses. and others converted
into bars, restaurants, tailors or opticians. Equally there is clearly a desire
to eventually remove two aspects that gives Hua Hin it’s unique charm
- the piers along Naresdamri Road which mainly host restaurants and
guesthouses, and the night bazaar area near the Hilton.
The growth of the town does demand certain improvements will need
to occur, but destroying elements that make Hua Hin different should be
avoided, sometimes even though financially in the short term it makes
sense; long term though the danger is creating a soulless clone of any beach
resort in Thailand., much like how the High Streets of the UK went from
being vibrant, fun and unique places to go shopping to what they are now;
dull, functional, and all the same.
Change is inevitable, but there is a responsibility by those in charge to
manage it so it does not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
