After the disastrous last minute cancellation of this year’s Jazz Festival,
originally scheduled for June, then July, then confirmed as 8th August but
being pulled for no obvious reason at very short notice, it has now been
announced that it will take place on Saturday 28th November at the Wave
Beach Club at the Hyatt Regency.
The five acts announced will begin at 5pm and are scheduled to run to
10pm, with an all Asian line up bar one, as follows:
5 - 6 pm Neung Jakkawai (Thailand)
6 - 7 pm Jerry Byrd Quartet (USA)
7 - 8 pm Pom, Jirapan, Eddie and Somchai (Thailand)
8 - 9 pm Jeremy Monteiro (Singapore)
9 - 10 pm ETC (Thailand)
As far as we can ascertain there is free admission, as is normally the case,
but very few other details are available. What little promotion that has been
carried out for the event has been in Thai.
As regular readers will know, AWOL has always been very supportive of
both the concept and promotion of the Jazz Festival, because when it first
began in 2001 it was a truly great event, taking over the whole town and
drawing thousands for the weekend. It remained this way for a few years
but has rapidly declined and was not even staged in 2012, and has been
reduced to a one evening event in recent years, with no fixed abode or
even time of year when it will take place. We hope that this year’s concert
will succeed, and we are sure it will be very enjoyable, but it has long since
ceased to earn the epithet ‘festival’ in our eyes; let us hope that new life can
be breathed into this formerly brilliant annual spectacle.
