Following the end of the Great War, World War 1, in 1918, it was decided to set a day to remember the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who had given their lives for their country, named Remembrance Day, and in 1919 the first of these was observed. The official date and time for this is the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, when a two minutes silence is observed, although official ceremonies now normally take place on the Sunday closest to that date. From around 1922 imitation poppies were sold to raise money to help injured soldiers and the families of lost soldiers, and this continues to the present day. This practice has been going on in Hua Hin for several years with the approval of the Royal British Legion, with poppies and official collection boxes in selected locations; this year is a special year for many reasons, not least because it marks 100 years since the start of World War 1. This year you can buy your poppies from three locations; Hua Hin Ham, Bacon and Meat Company in Soi 41, Ye Olde Buffalo Tavern at the Chomsin Road/ Naresdamri Road junction, and El Murphys in Soi Selakam. All money collected is transferred to the RBL, and you can find out more about how the money is used on their website at www.britishlegion.org.uk.
