The stretch of Phetkasem Road running from Soi 35 by Klai Kang Won Palace south beyond the flyover has been an increasing traffic problem since Market Village was first built, as clearly no or inadequate plans were made to cope with the traffic the shopping mall would generate, nor it seems for the rapid growth of the town in general. There is, it seems, now a plan, but clearly while the extensive work is being carried out, it is both difficult to see how it will improve traffic flow as well as creating potential for more accidents. With work continuing on the Canal Road, the Soi 112 area and long stretches of Phetkasem Road, the short term problems are mainly safety concerns, and the lack of adequate warning signs, cones and lighting, at night in particular, are key factors that need addressing. While the protests are understandable, we believe it would not be fair to judge the effectiveness or wisdom of the work until it is complete, but we do believe that greater attention needs to be made to reducing confusion and accident risk while the work is ongoing, whether that requires more traffic police, temporary traffic lights or simply better signage and lighting in the areas concerned. We must also hope that the work is complete by the time the giant Bluport Mall near Soi 102 and the water park near Soi 112 are finished, as these will generate more traffic.
