beach area restaurants accused of
over charging customers
hua hin, THAILAND
Twenty two restaurants in Hua Hin are reportedly under investigation for
over charging for food, following a series of complaints to police as well as
stories on social media. Police are encouraging both residents and tourists
alike to report to them if they believe they are being ripped off, particularly
by beach restaurants.
While no details of the restaurants concerned have been released, or many
details of how the alleged offences have transpired, it is believed that either
no menu or a menu with different prices is presented to customers, and
when they come to settle the bill are faced with an exorbitant amount.
Two instances have been quoted, one of which saw a group of customers
charged 3,820 baht for ordering only nine menu items, while a family from
Nonthaburi were charged over 7000 baht for their meal at a beach restaurant.
Police Major General Trithanet Sunthornsuk, the superintendent of
the Prachuap Khiri Khan police, concluded that the case is relevant to
consumer fraud. He also said there has been evidence showing the food
prices were intentionally manipulated.
Action has been swift, and at press time (Wednesday 13th August) the
authorities in Hua Hin have deployed a group of soldiers to conduct
‘beach-cleaning efforts’ to reorganize the beach area. Sixty six business
operators and restaurant owners would also have their shops and buildings
dismantled and would be completely evicted from the area. Police are
currently working with related agencies such as the Hua Hin Municipality
and the Consumer Protection Bureau to ensure that consumers are being
treated fairly.
