A meeting held at the main Tessaban offices last Friday seems to indicate a
genuine attempt by all concerned authorities to rid the area of the curse of
‘tea money’, bribes and corruption. The driving force behind this appears
to be the army, and high ranking officers along with tessaban and police
leaders convened the meeting with local licensed business owners to
outline the way forward.
At least fifty business owners were in attendance early Friday evening, and
the key directives they were informed about were as follows:
• All music must be turned off by midnight
• Customers can remain in a licensed premises until 1am, when they must
leave, and doors to the premises closed
• Penalties for breaching the opening hours are fines of 3000, 4000 and
5000 baht for first, second and third offences, followed by jail for a
fourth or further offences
• Any requests for payment by police to allow extended hours should be
refused and reported to the new police chief
• Anyone working in a licensed premises must be at least 18 years old;
any owner found with younger employees will be charged with human
trafficking
• All customers in a licensed premises must be at least 20 years of age
A petition is being prepared by licensed business owners to request later
opening hours be allowed in the area, which will be presented to the
Provincial Governer for his consideration, given the strong tourist industry
here and fears that the 1am closing time will deter tourists.
