A heartwarming story. It has been reported that staff at Bernards’ care home had been unable to secure a place for him on an official Royal British Legion trip. So the 89 year old donned his medals and simply disappeared to board a coach to France. The care home in question is said to be one of the best in England. Residents are free to come and go as they please. So how sad that Bernard felt he had to sneak out of there without saying where he was going. Even more sad that, when it was realised that there wasn’t a Royal British Legion place available, the home couldn’t have arranged for a member of staff to accompany Bernard on his journey. Of course that would have meant some expense and considerable staff time. But surely the good publicity to be gained from such a simple act of kindness and recognition would have been worth it? When you think about it though, the prospect of complying with Health and Safety legislation, together with ‘duty of care’ issues, may also have been a deterrent. The kind of issues which would make it impossible for Dream Guesthouse Cheap room for rent from just 350 baht 0915094729 Th/Eng 0805626735 Swe/Eng Soi 94 (1st left after 7-11) an operation like the D Day landings to ever happen again. Not that we would want it to happen again of course, or even need it in these times of modern warfare. But let’s just imagine what would happen if................. ‘Sorry sir those landing craft can’t go across the Channel. Their annual certificates of seaworthiness expire tomorrow.’ - or ‘These food rations need to be consumed within two days, they don’t include the minimum five a day, and those corned beef tins are lethal.’ And of course - ‘Yes I know the enemy is gathering over there ready to launch an attack, but the Met Office has forecast a gale force 8 and advised all small boats to stay in harbour sir.’ Fortunately for many of us people like Bernard just got on with it. Word of the week is ‘meretricious’ - meaning something which appears attractive but has no real value. A strange one this - because surely everything has some kind of value? Something to ponder over your next Chang perhaps.
