As it stands, an agreement was reached between RS Plc, the holder of the broadcasting rights for the 2014 Fifa World Cup, and TrueVisions, to sub-license rights to broadcast all 64 tournament matches,, so now Thai football fans have four options to view the 64 World Cup games — PSI-O2 HD subscribers, via RS’s Sunbox set-top box with a 299-baht one-time payment, RS’s World Cup set-top box priced at 1,590 baht, TrueVisions and currently 22 of the games on two free TV channels, Channel 7 and Channel 8, including the opening and final matches. TrueVisions subscribers on all packages will be able to view all 64 games, with some in HD, while Gold and Platinum subscribers can see all games in HD. The one outstanding issue was a court battle between RS and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, with the latter demanding that all the matches be shown on free to air channels, but the court ruled in RS favour just before our print deadline. There was still a chance that the other 42 matches will be on free to air TV as the National Council of Peace and Order has requested RS to allow this on the Army’s Channel 5 and 7 with “reason of returning happiness to the Thai people”, but no announcement had been made as we went to print. Earlier this week RS had threatened to pull the plug on all the matches if the court ruled that they had to broadcast all the games on free to air TV. AWOL includes our World Cup Wallchart again this week, with Thai dates and times of matches for those who missed it last week.
