dual track railway project to go
ahead, but high speed trains in doubt

In an announcement on Monday, National Council for Peace and Order
(NCPO) chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said that the dual-track railway
project will go ahead, while the high-speed railway project will be subject
to a new cost-benefit study.
Other parts of the past government’s transport and infrastructure spending
plans are also likely to be reviewed as state agencies were ordered to look
again at the budgets set by the last administration.
The railway projects of course have a direct impact on Hua Hin, and it is
good news that the dual track sttetching from Nakhon Phatom, west of
Bangkok, to Padang Besar on the Malaysian border, going via Hua Hin is
to be completed. That stretch is expected to cost a total of over 100 billion
baht, with some of it underway already and estimated to be completed by
2019.
In addition to the review of the high speed links, it was also announced
that parts of the 350 billion baht water management scheme previously
planned would be under review, while others would continue with the help
of the army.
In other coup-related news, it was announced on Tuesday that the curfew
was being lifted in the key tourist resorts of Phuket, Pattaya and Koh
Samui, following appeals from tourism bodies. The Association of Thai
Travel Agents urged the coupmakers two weeks ago to relax the curfew
in main tourist destinations in the three locations, as well as Hua Hin and
Krabi, and it must be hoped that these will be included soon.
