stray dogs - a
serious problem
hua hin, THAILAND
We have chosen this week to highlight the ongoing issue of stray dogs
after we were contacted by one of our readers who was bitten while
riding his motorbike in the Soi 73 area. Getting bitten by a dog is a painful
experience, both physically and financially, as it requires a course of
injections over a number of months, but there are other dangers that street
dogs inadvertently cause and face, such as traffic accidents and disease.
We contacted a local charity that is trying to combat the dangers for
both people and the dogs themselves to find out more about the problem;
Project Streetdogs Hua Hin (www.streetdogshuahin.com) was founded in
May 2011 by a Dutch woman named Marlie Timmermans, and along with
her team of volunteers have a mission to reduce the stray dog population.
Together with Tan-Diau Pet Hospital Hua Hin they ensure that the dogs
they care for are sterilised and healthy. They have treated and continue to
treat over 600 dogs for skin diseases, blood parasites and other diseases.
The sterilisation programme for stray dogs is very slow. First the dogs have
to gain their trust so they can be caught and sterilised. Despite this slow
process, Marlie has sterilised over 300 dogs since 2011. If one female can
have 100 puppies in her lifetime, that’s 30,000 fewer dogs on the streets.
You can help by donating to Project Streetdogs, to help them buy the
equipment to catch, sterilise and treat dogs, and eventually the soi dog
problem would disappear.
If you encounter hostile dogs, remember they have probably been abused
and are more fearful of you than you should be of them. Talk to them in a
friendly voice and walk on. Do not carry sticks or other weapons. A well
fed healthy dog has no reason to attack so please help Project Streetdogs
to help them.
