I am by no means an anti Royalist in the UK, but there
have been times when I believe they could have done a
much better job. There are also times when I wish our
Queen would retire gracefully, although in reality we all
know that she won’t - and many of us don’t relish the
idea of Prince Charles stepping into her shoes either.
But there are at last signs that her Majesty is preparing
to share more of her work load with her son and heir,
who will himself now be drawing his pension! There are
no doubt plenty of Brits who, despite their reservations,
will say ‘about time he did some proper work’, but to
be fair Britains’ favourite ‘tree hugger’ does seem to
be mellowing. His second wife Camilla is finally being
accepted, as memories of Diana gradually fade, and
the arrival of their grandson Prince George last year
appears to have secured the future of the monarchy for
many years to come.
The birth of yet another future King was of course greeted
by the kind of public adulation and flag waving which
we have come to expect, although it was interesting to
note that most of the crowd waiting outside the Palace
