IN FOCUS : TELLING OUR INDUSTRY ’ S STORY
The tugboat , towboat and barge industry has often sailed under the radar of public consciousness , even as it makes an outsized impact on Americans ’ daily lives . AWO is committed to raising that low profile and proudly telling the compelling story of our industry ’ s numerous contributions to the nation ’ s economy , security , supply chain and quality of life .
Technology and media continue to evolve rapidly . Recognizing the growing importance of video to make an impact on social media , in 2022 AWO enlisted a professional videographer to create our Careers that Make Waves video , which showcases our industry ’ s rewarding professional opportunities to reach the next generation of maritime workers .
AWO also ventured onto new social platforms , joining TikTok and expanding our Instagram presence to include Reels , highlighting our content in short clips and improving our reach with younger audiences . Our “ Coolness Factor ” social media campaign highlighted the fascinating variety of member operations – like transporting the Staten Island Ferry from a shipyard in Florida to its home in New York .
Elevating our profile in traditional media remains a major focus ; in 2022 , AWO produced more than 60 media and public affairs appearances for members and staff to tell our industry ’ s story in outlets ranging from CNN , USA Today and the Washington Post , to the Illinois Business Journal and the Everett Herald in Washington .
The media and communications landscape will continue to evolve . As we move Forward into the Future , AWO will use all available tools to share the story of our reliable , vital , uniquely American industry and the inspiring , hard-working people who keep our nation ’ s maritime commerce flowing .
