Other than preventing pregnancy, oral contraceptives can be taken to treat heavy or irregular menstruation, acne, dysmenorrhea( painful periods), hirsutism( excess hair growth on woman ' s face and body) and alopecia( hair loss).
But, like all good things in life, they also cause side-effects. Some of the common ill-effects of using oral contraceptives frequently are:- Nausea and vomiting- Weight gain- Mood changes- Missed periods- Visual changes with contact lense
Oral contraceptives are consumed by most women to prevent unwanted pregnancy. These pills do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases( STDs), including HIV. There are two types of contraceptive pills, both of which contain synthetic forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone or progestin.

A combination of estrogen and progestin in pills works by preventing ovulation( the release of eggs from the ovaries). They also change the lining of the uterus( womb) to prevent pregnancy from developing and change the mucus at the cervix( opening of the uterus) to prevent sperm( male reproductive cells) from entering. There is also a " mini pill " or a progestin-only pill, which contains only the hormone progestin and is usually prescribed to women who are breastfeeding or women who experience nausea with estrogen.
