Civics Bee
AWB held the first-ever Washington State Finals of the National Civics Bee in June at the Museum of Flight . It featured nine middle school students from around the state competing to be named state champion , furthering AWB ’ s commitment to civic discourse .
In this time of division and polarization , the competition is helping to show young people they have a role in democracy , teaching them how to engage their fellow citizens and even showing them how to respectfully disagree with one another .
Secretary of State Steve Hobbs served as emcee and a distinguished panel of judges included Chris Reykdal , the state superintendent of public instruction ; Jan Yoshiwara , retired executive director of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges ; and Brier Dudley , a Seattle Times editor .
