information to applicants for employment
Passed / AWB Opposed
Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5761 was introduced by Sen . Emily Randall , D-Bremerton . This bill requires employers to disclose in job postings the hourly or salary compensation , or a range , and a general description of all of the benefits and other compensation , rather than providing wage and salary information only upon request of an applicant after the initial job offer . It also removes the requirement that if no wage scale or salary range exists , the employer must provide the minimum wage or salary expectation prior to posting the position , making a position transfer , or making the promotion . The original wage disclosure bill , HB 1696 , was carefully negotiated , including negotiating the solution that the applicant gets the information when they get the offer . This bill goes way beyond the previous disclosure requirements . There could be some unintended consequences on this process including the inability of employer to offer alternative positions that a person applying for might be interested in accepting because of the initial disclosure requirements . The bill passed the House 51-46 and the Senate 28-21 . AWB continues to work with L & I on clarifying the requirements for employers .

The public rejected this system in an initiative passed in 2003 . This is an attempt to bring it back . The business community united in opposition to the legislation . The potential cost to employers could have been billions of dollars . It failed to move out of the Senate after a nine-hour debate in the House and narrow passage by a 50-48 margin .
