Psychology

Students in Year 10 have been working on perception and how this is often distorted and easily manipulated . They have looked at illusions and how they can be explained psychologically . ‘’ I enjoy learning about this topic as it gives me an opportunity to learn about how others see the world and that maybe what we see isn ’ t always what is in front of us .’’ Chloe Hunt
‘’ We have just recreated a psychological experiment by Peterson ( 1994 ) who wanted to investigate what we see first when we look at an image in order to decipher what it is . It was really interesting to see what our friends and family thought when we asked them to explain what they saw first - the black or the white colour in the image !’’
Luke Fernando and Joy Eastwood
Have a go for yourself – what do you see first – the black or the white colour …?
Now look at the second image – what do you see first – the black or the white colour …?
Within Year 11 , students have just completed their PPE examinations in 4 of the 5 units and are just starting the final unit ‘ are criminals born or made ?. ’ They will be debating what makes a criminal ; is it genetic ? Is it a self fulfilling prophecy ? Is it simply down to our environment ?
Students will also attempt to carry out ‘ offender profile ’, similar to that on the TV show ‘ Criminal Minds ’ and to research the job of a forensic psychologist . This is a very interesting and varied unit and the one they are all looking forward to getting their teeth into !
For students in year 8 who are currently embarking upon choosing their options - as you can see this is an exciting and varied course for those interested in an array of careers . I look forward to potentially teaching you next year !
