PHONICS – THE KEY TO DECODING VOCABULARY

PHONICS – THE KEY TO DECODING VOCABULARY

Early literacy support interventions are essential for students who need to boost their reading skills . With this in mind , new interventions have begun at Avon Valley School .
Students timetabled for Study Plus lessons now have targeted interventions in groups that have been designed to help them recover , and build upon their knowledge of phonics . Direct and systematic instructions will help students achieve the goal of becoming more effective and enthusiastic readers .
Students who struggle with literacy often have difficulties with phonic awareness . Our aim is to equip students with the skills to be able to access and know the 44 sounds and corresponding graphemes , support them in their practice in thinking about the order and links of sounds , and then link these sounds with appropriate letters .
With success in the basics of decoding words , students will be able to move on to reading with increased fluency and speed ; this will help them access the wider curriculum and enable them to develop a love of reading and the habit of reading for pleasure .
We will continue to champion the importance of supporting our young people to become proficient in their knowledge and mastery of phonics , and look forward to celebrating their subsequent growth in reading accuracy and fluency in both reading and writing .
Having returned focused from the Christmas break , Year 11 students are working extremely hard in preparation for the next phase of PPEs . They have completed their first topic on the Roaring Twenties and are currently working on ‘ Life in Nazi Germany ’.
