Physical Education
Despite the bad weather students across the school have been working hard in PE. The students in Year 7
have been introduced to orienteering where they have used their map skills to navigate their way around
the school course. Year 8 and 9 are developing their games skills, indoors and outdoors, and Year 9 have
been introduced to the elements of leadership and coaching. Students in Year 10 and 11 have a bit more
flexibility in their programme and at times can follow different options in areas of activity they wish to
develop further. They have taken to this very well with some excellent performances.
During the dark nights after school, the Netball league goes indoors with all year groups seeing plenty of
success against local schools, with Year 7 showing particularly good potential. Trampolining and Fitness
clubs still remain popular, and the boys have been playing Futsal games at Ashlawn school to keep the
momentum going before the league re-starts again in March.
Our Rugby Development Officer Katie, has been
working with Year 9 boys to develop their passing
and handling skills, and the fundamental aspects
of contact. She also led a Sports Studies session
with students, looking at leadership and delivery
of a progressive Rugby coaching session.
To back up their classwork, Year 9 Sports
Studies students were able to attend a
development day at Rugby School. They looked
at the development of the game of Rugby over
time and how Rugby school was instrumental in the formation and structure of the game. They visited the
Rugby Hall of Fame to look at role models within the sport and then listened to members of the National
Governing Body, the Rugby Football Union, as well as ex England international Tim Stimpson, who spoke
about the values that are promoted in the sport of Rugby, and his experience in the game. The students
and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experi-
ence and hopefully the students gained
some
valuable
information
in
preparation for their examination in May.
Sports Studies, GCSE PE and school
netballers also had the opportunity to
attend a Wasps Netball Development day
at the Ricoh Arena, where they could hone
their skills with the professionals. This was
an excellent and well organised event that all the girls will have greatly benefited from, it also made a
pleasant change from studying in the classroom.
Year 11 Sport Studies students have worked hard to plan their leadership sessions which they are now
busy delivering. They are continuing with their controlled assessment, and are making excellent use of
bubble time and study support that is on offer
For our Year 9, 10 & 11 Rugby players there are some excellent
before and after school.
