MIDLIFE UPDATE
As the Dutch contemplate the future of the NH90, one thing is clear – it will always be a work in progress. With technological advancements occurring at a rapid pace, and the mission set constantly evolving, the NH90 and its operators will need to innovate as well. A midlife update for the NH90s is already planned to begin around 2025. Commanders and planners are listening to the crews that operate the NH90s and those that operate alongside them aboard ships to get the best picture of what upgrades will be needed. For instance, crews have asked for enhanced data and video uplinks so that information can be shared in real-time.
Commanders, pilots and crews all agree that the road the NH90 has taken has been a bumpy one, but also take pride in the progress that has been made and improvements that contribute to mission success. There is no doubt that the NH90 is finally emerging from its growing pains into a very capable platform that will only get better with time.
