In the summer of 2021, Thom Richard and his trusty staff moved from Kissimmee, FL to Ninety Six, a small town in South Carolina, where he found a 104-acre ranch that is perfect for his airplanes and his business, Warbird Adventures Vintage Aircraft Flying School.
In early 2023, Thom contacted aviation photographers Mike Killian and Ricardo von Puttkammer to discuss the possibility of having an event catered to photographers at his American Dream SkyRanch. Thom, a very popular performer at airshows around the country with his P-40 “American Dream”, thought that photographers would appreciate an environment where they could photograph aircraft in ways not usually afforded to them at a regular airshow so they could learn the coveted craft of aviation photography under professional guidance. The SkyRanch Shootout was born!
The idea grew into a 2-day event, featuring flying displays, static shoots and night engine runs, along with a Milky Way photography workshop by Mike Killian. The event attracted all levels of photographers, with Ricardo and Mike on hand to answer any questions during the various workshops about aviation photography. Many photographers came with friends and family members and opted to put up tents and RV’s at the on-property campground .
One of the highlights of the event was the raffle for an air-to-air mission, where a lucky photographer was be able to take pictures of Thom’s P-40 in the air from a T-6. All registered photographers automatically entered the raffle. Air to air was also available for a fee to those who wanted to try that aspect of photography.
Another highlight was the night engine run of not one, not two, but three P-40s!
The talented Theresa Eaman provided the musical entertainment during the late afternoon dinner break. Photographers took advantage of the beautiful sunset and sunrise at the ranch.
