It was 25 years ago this year that the combat phase of the Gulf War, Desert Storm, came to an end. On February 28, 1991 President George H.W. Bush declared a ceasefire and announced that Kuwait had been liberated. As Aviation Photojournal looks back at Desert Storm, we profile some of the venerable aircraft that participated in the war. First, we cover US combat aircraft, followed by combat veterans of the Royal Air Force, and finally aircraft of Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1) aboard USS America as she visited New York City for a tremendous and exhilerating welcome home parade. Another Gulf War combat veteran can be seen in our coverage of Red Flag 16-1. See page 22 for details.

This F/A-18C, 163509 assigned to VFA-83, CVW-17, was a flying tribute to lost squadronmate, Randy L. Neel, who perished in a ferry accident off the port of Haifa, Israel, December 23, 1990. Neel's name appears on the nose gear door.
