On May 18, 2016, SAAB rolled out the newest version of its Gripen fighter, the Gripen E. In the planning stages since 2007, the enhanced Gripen will feature an upgraded radar, IRST sensor, increased fuel load and weapons payload and a helmet mounted sight, among other improvements. Several other refinements in the structure and systems of the new jet will allow the Gripen to fly and fight for the foreseable future. Initial customers for the Gripen E are Sweden and Brazil while several other air forces have expressed interest. The Gripen E is scheduled to make its maiden flight later this year with initial operational capability scheduled for 2023.
