The ship is named after George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States. President Bush enlisted in the US Navy on his 18th birthday and soon became the youngest pilot in the Navy to receive his wings and commission. He went on to fly Grumman Avengers during several key campaigns in the Pacific. During one such mission over the island of Chichi Jima, President Bush’s aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and despite severe damage, he finished his staffing run and was able to bail out over the ocean. He was rescued by a US submarine and was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross along with three Air Medals. President Bush would go on to serve as a Congressman from Texas, US Ambassador to the United Nations, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Vice President and ultimately, President of the United States. As President, he was instrumental in putting together the coalition that successfully routed Iraqi forces and freed Kuwait. CVN-77 celebrates President Bush’s lifetime of service to his country and its motto “Freedom at Work” is taken from his inaugural address.
