Flying boats and amphibians played a key role in early Coast Guard aviation. Between 1931 and 1935, the USCG took delivery of 13 Douglas RD Dolphins (above). The Dolphins were used primarily for search and rescue operations and flew security patrols throughout World War II. This Dolphin, on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum was once the personal aircraft of William Boeing, founder of the Boeing Aircraft Corporation.
