The Sikorsky H03S (above), like this one on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL, served in the USCG in the late 1940s and into the 1950s. Used as a search and rescue platform, it also served to pioneer many new helicopter techniques and technologies. The H03S pictured here participated in a daring rescue on September 4, 1951. Flying out of Coast Guard Air Station Salem, MA LT Clarence Easter located a downed USAF pilot, landed on the water (it was equipped with floation gear), and dove into the water to rescue the pilot.
