ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A project like this would never get off the ground without the

help of a lot of people, almost all of whom are way too busy to

spend time helping two photojournalists writing a story.

Nevertheless, time after time, each one of these people went

above and beyond to ensure we could properly tell the inspiring

saga of a century of Coast Guard aviation. As many of you know

from the pages of Aviation Photojournal, telling the story of

aviation in all its glory is our primary mission. As the USCG

celebrated their Centennial of Aviation, we were naturally drawn

to the story. It dawned on us that not many people appreciated

the deep roots the Coast Guard has in aviation lore and the key

role it has played in their history, US history and the evolution to

the multi-faceted organization it is today. Feeling a great

responsibility to tell this story and to tell it right, we wanted to

visit as many Coast Guard Air Stations as time would allow. And

that is where we begin our thank yous: To the men and women

of Air Stations Traverse City, Cape Cod, Clearwater and ATC

Mobile, we extend our sincerest appreciation for your

hospitality, professionalism and patience. You answered every

one of our questions, worked hard to grant our requests and did

everything with a smile. There were many times that we turned

to each other to marvel at how nice everyone was (and not just

because we are jaded New Yorkers!). We can only hope that we

did justice to your story and that you are happy with the result

of your efforts on our behalf. To witness firsthand the spirit and

dedication of the Coast Guard aviation community was truly an

awe inspiring thing - and a comforting one as well, knowing that

if we are ever in peril, we can count on these heroes to do

everything they can to save the day.
