Above: Not all USCG pilots are based ... on Earth. Captain Dan Burbank and Commander Bruce Melnick are the only two to have joined the ranks of NASA astronauts. Melnick was first and flew on missions STS-41 and STS-49, while Burbank flew on STS-106 and STS-115 as well as Expedition 29/30. It's not every day you meet a Coast Guard pilot with patches on his flight suit commemorating 100 days in space and achieving a speed of Mach 25. Both Astronauts attended the 2016 Annual Pterodactyl Roost celebrating the 50th anniversary of ATC Mobile (below).
