Spitfire Mk IXc
On 25 May 2021, Vickers Supermarine Spitfire LF. IX MJ755( c / n CBAF‐IX‐1285), registered as G‐CLGS, departed Biggin Hill in the United Kingdom on its long‐awaited journey home to Greece. The historic fighter followed a carefully planned route through Italy, stopping at Perugia, Pescara, and Lucca‐Tassignano, before completing the second day of its delivery flight with a landing at Brindisi at 17:35 local time. On 27 May, the Spitfire continued via Corfu and Ioannina, arriving at its final destination, Athens – Tatoi, later that day. MJ755 holds a unique place in Hellenic Air Force history. Withdrawn from EPA service in 1953, it was stored and later displayed at Tatoi air base, before
becoming a static exhibit at the Hellenic Air Force Museum in 1992. Initial restoration efforts began in Greece in 2007, while the final phase was completed at Biggin Hill, where the aircraft arrived in March 2018.
Finished in its original Hellenic Air Force colours with code“ F‐H,” the Spitfire first flew again on 19 January 2020, marking its first flight in 67 years. The restoration was fully funded by the Icarus Foundation of Piraeus, whose commitment ensured the return of this iconic Greek Spitfire to the skies, preserving a living symbol of national aviation heritage.
