383 SQN“ Proteas” Aerial Fire Fighting
383 Firefighting Squadron of the Hellenic Air Force has been a cornerstone of Greece’ s aerial firefighting capability since its establishment in 1974. Originally formed to address the growing threat of wildfires across Greece’ s mountainous and forested regions, the squadron first operated the Canadair CL‐215, a rugged and reliable amphibious aircraft that became the backbone of Greece’ s aerial firefighting fleet for decades. These distinctive yellow‐and‐red aircraft built the squadron’ s reputation for rapid response and courageous low‐level flying. In the early 2000s, the squadron transitioned to the more modern Canadair CL‐415, which remains its primary aircraft today. The CL‐415 introduced stronger engines, improved handling, and greater
water‐delivery efficiency, allowing 383 Squadron to respond faster and operate in more demanding conditions. The unit, based at Mikra Air Base, continues to cooperate closely with the Hellenic Fire Service and Civil Protection, often conducting multiple missions per day during peak fire season.
Looking ahead, Greece plans to modernize its fleet with the new DHC‐515“ Super Scooper,” the latest evolution of the Canadair firefighting aircraft line. This next‐generation platform promises increased payload, enhanced avionics, and greater reliability. With these future upgrades, 383 Squadron will continue to play a decisive role in protecting Greece’ s environment and communities from the growing threat of wildfires.
