355 SQN“ Dimitrios” Aerial Fire Fighting

355 Squadron is one of Greece’ s two legendary aerial firefighting units. Although officially established in 1998, its roots go back to 1974 when Greece acquired its first CL 215 Canadair aircraft. Based at Elefsis, the squadron operates both CL 215s and CL 415s, and sometimes supports CL 415GR variants. Its mission is one of the most dangerous in aviation: low altitude water bombing in mountainous terrain during intense wildfires. Every summer, 355 Squadron’ s aircraft perform thousands of water drops across the country, helping protect forests, villages, and infrastructure. The squadron’ s
pilots are among the most respected in Greece. Flying Canadairs demands skill, strength, and judgment— especially during turbulent scooping maneuvers or drops in heavy smoke. The unit also deploys internationally under EU and bilateral cooperation frameworks, assisting countries such as Italy, France, and Israel. Despite the aging of the CL 215s, 355 Squadron remains a symbol of national resilience. Their aircraft, painted yellow and red, are widely recognized and deeply admired by the Greek public.
